Adolescent Anemia implemented in BMC schools in Mumbai

Highlights

  1. According to the National Family Health Survey (NHFS-5) 2019-2021, 54.7% adolescent girls in Maharashtra are anemic. CACR in collaboration with UNICEF Maharashtra, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Anemia Mukt Bharat, kickstarted the ‘Anemia Mukt Mumbai’ campaign to prevent anemia in adolescents in schools and communities of Mumbai E Ward.
  2. The campaign focused on driving behavior change through system strengthening, Social & Behavior Change Communication (SBC) techniques, leveraging public partnerships, and implementing the 4Ts:
  3. Train: Capacity building of teachers, students and health workers
  4. Talk: Awareness session on prevention and treatment of anemia
  5. Test: Facilitating anemia testing through public health department
  6. Treat: Therapeutic treatment and Curative treatment via local health posts

Data for graph

  1. Enhancing capabilities of 219 students and 83 teachers across 35 schools in effective communication strategies to address adolescent anemia.
  2. Training 116 community health volunteers and ASHA workers, and leveraging their network to build awareness about anemia amongst 2668 community members.
  3. Capacity building of 15 FBOs and local organisations to build awareness amongst 2102 adolescents and 2034 parents.
  4. Testing 1500 adolescents for anemia through local health centers
  5. Early diagnosis and treatment provided to 250 adolescents
